You close Facebook for two seconds to check a text message, come back, and… logged out again 🙁
What the actual fuck is going on?!
You’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not alone in this nightmare. Facebook randomly logging you out every single time you close the app or switch to something else is one of the most annoying technical problems on the platform right now.
I‘m gonna show you exactly why this happens and how to fix it, you motherfuckers.
Why Facebook Keeps Kicking You Out
Before we jump into solutions, let’s talk about why this bullshit happens in the first place…
Your browser or app is clearing cookies automatically – This is the big one, not gonna lie. If your browser settings are configured to clear cookies and cache every time you close it, Facebook loses your login session immediately.
It’s like burning your house key every time you leave home and wondering why you can’t get back in.
Multiple devices logged in simultaneously – Facebook gets paranoid when it sees you logged in from several devices at once, especially if they’re in different locations. Sometimes it just logs you out of everything as a “security measure.”
Outdated app version – Running an old version of the Facebook app causes all kinds of weird bugs, including session management problems that kick you out constantly.
Third-party apps messing with your session – Those random quizzes and games you connected to Facebook years ago? They can interfere with your login sessions and cause unexpected logouts.
Facebook’s servers being assholes – Sometimes Facebook itself is having technical issues or rolls out buggy updates that break session management for thousands of users at once.
Someone else accessing your account – If someone knows your password and keeps logging in from their device, Facebook will log you out to prevent simultaneous sessions from unknown locations.
Network switching between WiFi and data – If your phone constantly switches between WiFi and mobile data, Facebook sees each switch as a potential security issue and logs you out.
Fix It: Clear Cache But Keep Cookies
The first thing to try is clearing your cache without deleting cookies, which stores your login session…
For the Facebook app on Android: Settings → Apps → Facebook → Storage → Clear Cache (do NOT tap Clear Data)
For iPhone users: You’ll need to go into the Facebook app itself → Menu (three lines) → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Scroll down to Media → Clear Cache
For web browsers: The process varies by browser, but generally you want to clear cache while keeping cookies intact. In most browsers, you can customize what gets deleted when you clear browsing data.
After clearing cache, restart the app or browser completely and log back in. This fixes the problem for a lot of people immediately.
Why This Works
Corrupted cache files can interfere with how Facebook manages your session. Clearing them forces the app to rebuild fresh data while keeping your login cookies safe.
Stop Your Browser From Auto-Clearing Cookies
If you’re using Facebook in a web browser, check if your browser is set to clear cookies automatically when you close it…
This is probably the most common cause of constant logouts, and most people don’t even realize their browser is doing it.
Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data → Make sure “Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows” is turned OFF
Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Under History, make sure it’s NOT set to “Clear history when Firefox closes”
Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Uncheck “Block all cookies” and make sure you’re not in Private Browsing mode
Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Under “Clear browsing data,” make sure “Choose what to clear every time you close the browser” doesn’t include cookies
Once you’ve adjusted these settings, Facebook should stop logging you out every time you close your browser.
Log Out of Other Devices
Facebook limits how many active sessions you can have, and if you’re logged in on too many devices, it starts randomly kicking you out of some of them…
How to check active sessions: Open Facebook → Menu → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login → Look for “Where You’re Logged In”
You’ll see a list of every device and location that’s currently logged into your account. If you see devices you don’t recognize or old sessions from devices you no longer use, log them out seperately and immediately.
Tap the three dots next to each session and select Log Out. This forces Facebook to end those sessions and should stop the constant logout problem on your main device.
Update the Facebook App
Running an outdated version of Facebook is asking for problems, including random logouts that make no sense…
Android users: Open Google Play Store → Search for Facebook → Tap Update if available
iPhone users: Open App Store → Search for Facebook → Tap Update if available
After updating, force close the app completely and reopen it. Sometimes the logout issue is caused by bugs in older versions that get fixed in updates.
Remove Sketchy Third-Party Apps
Remeber those “Which Disney Princess Are You?” quizzes from five years ago? Those third-party apps can mess with your Facebook login sessions…
How to remove them: Facebook → Menu → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Apps and Websites
You’ll see every app and website that has access to your Facebook account. Go through the list and remove anything you don’t actively use or don’t recognize by tapping Remove.
I’m not playing – some of these apps are straight up sketchy and can cause logout issues or worse security problems.
Change Your Password
If someone else knows your password and keeps logging in, Facebook will log you out to prevent simultaneous sessions from suspicious locations…
Changing your password immediately kicks everyone else out and forces them to use the new password.
How to change it: Menu → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login → Change Password
Make it something strong and unique that you haven’t used before. And seriously, don’t share it with anyone, even people you trust.
After changing your password, Facebook will ask if you want to log out of all other sessions. Say YES to that option.
Disable Browser Extensions Temporarily
If you’re using Facebook in a web browser, extensions can interfere with login sessions and cause unexpected logouts…
Ad blockers, privacy extensions, and security tools sometimes block the scripts Facebook uses to maintain your session.
How to test this: Disable all your browser extensions temporarily, then try using Facebook. If it stops logging you out, one of your extensions is the problem.
Enable them one at a time to figure out which extension is causing the issue, then either remove it or whitelist Facebook in that extension’s settings.
Check if Facebook Servers Are Down
Sometimes the problem isn’t you at all – it’s Facebook having widespread technical issues…
Visit DownDetector and search for Facebook to see if other users are reporting similar problems right now. Check Twitter/X for #FacebookDown to see if there’s a mass outage happening.
If Facebook’s servers are having problems, there’s nothing you can do except wait for their engineers to fix their shit. Server issues usually resolve within a few hours at most.
Reinstall the Facebook App
When nothing else works, a clean reinstall often fixes corrupted files that clearing cache can’t touch…
Before uninstalling: Make sure you know your login credentials (email/phone and password) because you’ll need to log back in.
Then: Uninstall Facebook from your device, restart your phone completely, reinstall Facebook from Google Play Store or App Store, log back in with your credentials.
A fresh install gives you the latest version with no corrupted data from previous installations.
Turn Off Private Browsing Mode
If you’re using Facebook in private or incognito browsing mode, it automatically deletes all cookies when you close the browser window…
That’s literally the point of private browsing – it doesn’t save anything. So Facebook logs you out every single time because there’s no saved session data.
Stop using private mode for Facebook if you want to stay logged in. Use a regular browser window instead.
Fix Network Connectivity Issues
Unstable internet connections can make Facebook think your session ended, causing automatic logouts…
If your phone keeps switching between WiFi and mobile data, or if your WiFi connection is weak and drops frequently, Facebook interprets these as security concerns.
Try this: Turn off mobile data and use WiFi only when using Facebook, or turn off WiFi and use mobile data only. Consistent connection = fewer unexpected logouts.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
This might seem counterintuitive, but enabling 2FA can actually reduce logout issues by making Facebook more confident about your identity…
How to enable: Menu → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login → Use two-factor authentication
Set it up using an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy rather than SMS codes. This adds an extra security layer while helping Facebook recognize your legitimate login sessions.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
Try these in order:
1. Clear cache but keep cookies in browser/app settings
2. Turn off auto-clear cookies in browser settings
3. Log out of all other devices through Security settings
4. Update Facebook app to latest version
5. Remove old third-party apps and games
6. Change your password and log out all sessions
7. Disable browser extensions temporarily to test
8. Check DownDetector for Facebook outages
9. Stop using private/incognito browsing mode
10. Reinstall Facebook app completely
11. Fix network connectivity switching issues
12. Enable two-factor authentication for security
Most people find their solution in steps 1-3. The logout problem usually comes down to browser settings clearing cookies or too many devices logged in simultaneously.
Understanding Facebook’s Session Management
Facebook creates a unique session token when you log in. This token is stored in cookies on your device and tells Facebook “this is a legitimate logged-in user.”
Sessions typically last about 20 minutes of inactivity before requiring a refresh. If anything interrupts this token – clearing cookies, network changes, simultaneous logins – Facebook assumes the session is compromised and logs you out for security.
It’s annoying when you’re a legitimate user, but this system helps protect accounts from hackers and unauthorized access.
What NOT to Do
Don’t keep logging in repeatedly without fixing the root cause. This wastes your time and doesn’t solve anything.
Don’t ignore security warnings from Facebook. If Facebook says someone else accessed your account, take it seriously and change your password immediately.
Don’t use the same password across multiple sites. If hackers get your password from another site, they’ll try it on Facebook too.
Wrapping This Up
Facebook constantly logging you out is infuriating, but it’s almost always caused by browser settings clearing cookies, multiple devices logged in at once, or outdated app versions…
Start with checking your browser’s cookie settings – that fixes it for most people within seconds. If that doesn’t work, log out of old devices and update your app to the latest version.
And look, while these constant logouts are annoying as hell, they’re usually Facebook’s security system working as designed. The platform takes account security seriously, even if it occasionally inconveniences legitimate users like you.
Most people get this fixed within 10 minutes of trying these solutions 🙂
Now go get back to scrolling through your feed without having to re-enter your password every five minutes.
