Can’t Reset Facebook Password Without Access to Email or Phone

facebook password reset no email phone access

So you set up two-factor authentication on Facebook because you wanted to be all secure and responsible, and now it’s literally locking you out of your own damn account πŸ™

You’re sitting there waiting for a code that never shows up, refreshing your messages every ten seconds like some kind of psycho, and Facebook just doesn’t give a shit about your existence…

I’m not going to lie to you – this is one of the most infuriating tech problems you can deal with! You did everything “right” by enabling 2FA, and now Facebook’s broken SMS system is punishing you for it. What the fuck is happening??

Why Facebook’s 2FA System Is Such a Dumpster Fire

Facebook’s two-factor authentication is supposed to protect your account by sending you a special code every time you log in from a new device… But when those codes don’t arrive? You’re completely screwed becuase Facebook doesn’t have a decent backup plan for when their system fails.

The SMS delivery system relies on your phone carrier, Facebook’s servers, and about fifty other things that can go wrong… And when they do go wrong, Facebook basically acts like “not our problem, figure it out yourself.”

Here’s what’s really going on: Facebook sends your 2FA code to your carrier, but somewhere along the way, it disappears into the void… Maybe your carrier blocked it, maybe Facebook’s number (32665) is on your blocked list, maybe the network is having issues, or maybe Facebook’s system is just having a bad day and decided to screw with you specifically.

Quick Fix #1 β€” Check If Facebook’s Number Is Blocked

This sounds stupid but I’m not playing – it works for a surprising number of people…

Facebook sends 2FA codes from the shortcode 32665. If you’ve ever blocked this number (or if your phone automatically blocked it thinking it was spam), you won’t receive any codes!

How to check and unblock on iPhone:

  • Open Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts
  • Look for 32665 in the list
  • If it’s there, swipe left and tap Unblock
  • Restart your phone and try requesting the code again

How to check and unblock on Android:

  • Open your Messages app
  • Tap the three dots > Settings > Blocked numbers
  • Find 32665 and unblock it
  • Restart your phone and request a new code

After unblocking, send a text message to 32665 with the word “ON” or “START” to reactivate Facebook texts to your number… This tells Facebook’s system that you actually want to receive messages from them.

Quick Fix #2 β€” Your Phone Number Might Be Wrong

This happens more than you’d think… Maybe you typed your number wrong when setting up 2FA, or maybe you’re missing the country code, or maybe Facebook just screwed it up somehow.

If you can still access Facebook on a device where you’re already logged in, check your number:

  1. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings
  2. Click Security and Login
  3. Under Two-Factor Authentication, check if the number listed is correct
  4. Make sure it includes the right country code (like +1 for US)
  5. Update it if it’s wrong, then try logging in again

If you’re in the US, your number should start with +1. UK is +44. Canada is +1. Australia is +61… So many people set up their phone number without the country code, and then the code goes to some nonexistent number. If you can’t access your Facebook account after your phone number changed, this could definitely be why!

Use an Authenticator App Instead

Real talk: SMS 2FA is trash compared to authenticator apps… If you ever manage to get back into your account, switch to using Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Duo Mobile instead of relying on text messages.

Why authenticator apps are better:

  • No network required – The codes generate right on your phone without needing cell service
  • More reliable – No carrier issues, no blocked numbers, no SMS delays
  • More secure – Can’t be intercepted like SMS codes can be
  • Works when traveling – Don’t need international SMS to work properly

The catch? You need to set this up BEFORE you get locked out… When you set up an authenticator app on Facebook, they give you backup codes – 10 special codes you can use if you lose your phone or the app stops working. SAVE THESE CODES! Screenshot them, print them, write them down – just don’t skip this step motherfuckers!

Try Logging In From a Recognized Device

If you’ve ever logged into Facebook on your laptop, tablet, or work computer and clicked “Remember this device,” you might still be logged in there…

Check every device you own – your laptop, your work computer, your tablet, old phones you still have… If you find a device where you’re still logged in, DON’T LOG OUT! Instead, go straight to your security settings and either turn off 2FA temporarily or switch to an authenticator app. This might be your only chance to fix the issue!

Use Your Recovery Codes (If You Saved Them)

When you first set up 2FA on Facebook, they gave you 10 recovery codes… Each code can be used once to log in without needing your phone or authenticator app. If you actually saved those codes (which nobody ever does), you can use one right now!

Where to enter recovery codes:

When Facebook asks for your 2FA code, look for a link that says “Having trouble?” or “Try another way”… Click that, then select the option to use a recovery code. Enter one of your 8-digit codes and boom – you’re back in!

But if you never saved your recovery codes (like 99% of people), this won’t help you… Which is why you should ALWAYS save them as soon as you set up 2FA on any account!

The Nuclear Option β€” Report the Issue to Facebook

Okay so nothing else worked and you’re still locked out… Time to fill out Facebook’s support forms and hope for the best (spoiler alert: don’t hold your breath).

Report issue with Facebook mobile texts:

Go to Facebook’s help center and search for “Report an issue with Facebook mobile texts” – there’s a specific form for when SMS isn’t working… Fill out every single field completely:

  1. Select “Receiving texts” as your issue type
  2. Enter your mobile network operator (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.)
  3. Enter your phone number with the correct country code
  4. Provide a contact email address you can actually access
  5. Select your country
  6. Describe the problem – “Not receiving Facebook 2FA codes via SMS”
  7. Click Send and then wait

Facebook says they’ll respond “within a few days” but in reality it could be anywhere from 24 hours to never… If Facebook won’t let you log in and password reset isn’t working either, you might be waiting a while.

The ID verification last resort

If SMS won’t work and you have no other way in, Facebook might ask you to upload a government-issued ID to verify your identity… Yeah, it’s invasive as hell, but if you want your account back, you gotta play their game. Make sure the photo is clear, all text is legible, and the name on your ID matches your Facebook name exactly.

What If You Changed Your Phone Number

This is a nightmare scenario – you set up 2FA with your old phone number, then you switched carriers or got a new number, and now the codes are going to a number you don’t have access to anymore…

First, try to see if you can temporarily reactivate your old number… Call your previous carrier and explain you need to receive a verification code. Some carriers will let you reactivate a disconnected number for a short time (usually costs money but might be worth it).

If that’s not possible, you’ll need to use one of these backup methods:

  • Log in from a recognized device where you’re still logged in
  • Use recovery codes if you saved them when setting up 2FA
  • Use an authenticator app if you set one up as a backup
  • Contact Facebook support with ID verification

Facebook keeps logging people out for security reasons, and if you can’t verify yourself, they won’t let you back in… It’s harsh but that’s how they operate.

Quick Troubleshooting Tips

Disable your VPN – If you’re using a VPN, turn it off when trying to log into Facebook… Sometimes Facebook’s security system blocks login attempts from VPN IP addresses and won’t send codes.

Check your date and time settings – If your phone’s date and time are wrong, 2FA codes might not work properly… Go to your phone settings and enable “Automatic date & time” to sync with your network.

Clear Facebook app cache – On Android: Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage > Clear Cache. On iPhone: delete and reinstall the app to clear the cache.

Wait 24 hours – If you requested codes too many times, Facebook might temporarily block you from getting more… Yeah, it’s bullshit, but waiting a day and trying again might work.

Preventing This From Happening Again

Once you finally get back into your account (if you get back in), do these things IMMEDIATELY:

1. Switch to an authenticator app – Ditch SMS 2FA and use Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy instead

2. Save your recovery codes – Screenshot them, print them, save them in a password manager – just don’t skip this step!

3. Add a backup phone number and email – Give Facebook multiple ways to contact you in case one method fails

4. Set up recognized devices – Tell Facebook to remember your main devices so you don’t need codes every single time

5. Enable BOTH SMS and authenticator app – Facebook lets you use both at the same time. If one method fails, you’ll have the other as a backup!

The Bottom Line

Look, Facebook’s 2FA system is broken and has been for years… The SMS delivery is unreliable, their support is nonexistent, and you’re basically on your own when things go wrong.

Most of the time, the issue is fixable if you know the right tricks – unblocking 32665, using recovery codes, or accessing from a recognized device… But sometimes you’re just screwed and Facebook support won’t help you, and that’s when you realize how little control you actually have over your own social media presence.

The frustrating part is that 2FA is supposed to make your account MORE secure, not lock you out of it! But when the system doesn’t work properly, you end up in this absurd situation where you’re being punished for trying to protect your own account.
