And the frustrating part? This is YOUR data that Facebook legally has to give you. But their download system is so broken that actually GETTING your archive is a nightmare 🙁
I’m not gonna lie, Facebook’s data download feature is one of the buggiest parts of the entire platform. It fails constantly and Facebook doesn’t even give you useful error messages.
Why Facebook Data Archive Won’t Download
Alright so here’s what’s actually going on… Facebook’s data archive system has multiple failure points, and if ANY of them break, your download fails.
The system is so fragile…
Common reasons Facebook data downloads fail:
- File size is massive – Archives over 2GB often fail to download on mobile or slow connections
- Browser issues – Pop-up blockers, download managers, or browser settings block the file
- Facebook’s servers timeout – Archive preparation times out if you have tons of data
- Download link expired – Links are only valid for a few days before expiring
- Account verification required – Facebook blocks download until you verify identity
Let’s break these down…
Your Archive Is Too Big
If you’ve been on Facebook for 10+ years with thousands of photos and posts, your data archive can be GIGANTIC. We’re talking 5GB, 10GB, even 20GB+ for heavy users.
The file is just enormous!!
Large files are more likely to fail during download, especially on mobile connections or if your internet hiccups even once. The download will get to 87% and then just… fail. And you have to start over from scratch.
Facebook doesn’t support resume functionality for archive downloads, so if it fails, you lose ALL progress and have to restart the entire download deadass.
Browser Is Blocking the Download
Pop-up blockers, ad blockers, privacy extensions, or browser security settings can all prevent Facebook’s download from starting. You click the download button and… nothing happens.
Or your browser STARTS the download but then your antivirus or download manager flags it as suspicious and blocks it. Facebook’s archive files are compressed in weird ways that sometimes trigger false positives in security software.
It won’t even start…
Facebook’s Archive Preparation Fails
When you request your data, Facebook has to gather everything from their servers and compress it into a downloadable file. This “preparation” process can take HOURS or even DAYS if you have a lot of data.
Sometimes the preparation just… fails. Facebook says “We’re preparing your archive” for 48 hours, then sends you a notification saying it’s ready, but when you try to download? Error message. No explanation.
The Download Link Expired
Facebook gives you a download link that’s only valid for a LIMITED time, usually around 4-7 days. If you don’t download your archive within that window? The link expires and you have to request a new one.
It just expired?!
And here’s the kicker… even if the link is still “valid” according to Facebook, sometimes it just stops working after a few days anyway. You click download and get an error even though Facebook says the archive is available.
Facebook Wants Identity Verification
If Facebook’s security system flags your account (because you used a VPN, logged in from a new location, or for literally no reason), they might require identity verification before letting you download your data.
They won’t TELL you this upfront. You’ll just get a vague error when trying to download, and only after digging through settings will you find a verification request. Similar to how Facebook randomly asks for identity verification, they can block data downloads too.
How to Actually Download Your Facebook Data
Okay so let’s get into solutions that work.
Quick Fixes to Try First
- Use a desktop computer with wired internet – Mobile downloads fail way more often
- Disable browser extensions temporarily – Pop-up blockers and ad blockers can interfere
- Request a smaller date range – Instead of “all time,” request just the last year to reduce file size
- Use Chrome or Firefox – These browsers handle large downloads better than Safari or Edge
- Check your available storage space – Make sure you have 2x the archive size in free space
Start with these and most download problems will be solved.
This fixes it for most people!!
Request Your Data in Smaller Chunks
Instead of downloading ALL your data at once, request it in smaller pieces. Go to Settings & Privacy → Settings → Your Facebook Information → Download Your Information.
Under Date Range, select a specific year (like 2020) instead of “All time.” Under Format, choose HTML instead of JSON. Under Media Quality, choose “Low” if you just need the data.
This creates a MUCH smaller archive that’s way less likely to fail. You can request multiple archives for different years if needed.
Smaller files actually work…
Disable Browser Extensions
Turn off ALL browser extensions temporarily, especially ad blockers and pop-up blockers. These can interfere with Facebook’s download.
Chrome: Three dots → Extensions → Manage Extensions → toggle off. Firefox: Menu → Add-ons → disable everything.
Try downloading with extensions disabled. If it works, turn them back on one by one to figure out which blocked it.
Check Your Storage Space
Make sure you have ENOUGH free space on your device. If your archive is 5GB but you only have 3GB free? The download will fail.
You need at least 2x the archive size in free space because browsers download to a temp location first, then move the file to your downloads folder. So a 4GB archive needs 8GB+ free space to download successfully.
Check your available storage: Windows (right-click C: drive → Properties), Mac (Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage). If you’re low on space, this is probably why downloads keep failing. This is similar to why the Facebook app takes up so much storage on phones.
Wait for the Correct Notification
Don’t try to download your archive as soon as you request it. Wait for Facebook to send you a notification saying “Your download is ready.”
Wait for the notification!!
If you try to download before it’s fully prepared, you’ll get an error. Be patient and wait, which can take 10 minutes to 48 hours.
Request a New Archive If Link Expired
If your download link expired, go back to Settings → Your Facebook Information → Download Your Information and create a NEW request.
The old archive is gone once the link expires. Facebook doesn’t save it lol.
Facebook Data Download-Specific Problems
Now let’s talk about issues that are Facebook’s fault.
Download Button Does Nothing
You get the notification that your archive is ready, you click the download button, and… absolutely nothing happens??
What the fuck?!
This is usually caused by JavaScript being disabled, pop-ups being blocked, or Facebook’s download system just being broken. Try opening the download page in an incognito window with all extensions disabled.
Archive Says “Expired” Immediately
Sometimes Facebook says your archive is ready, but when you try to download it immediately says “This download has expired” even though it was just created??
This is a bug on Facebook’s end. The archive preparation failed but Facebook sent you a notification anyway. You have to request a new archive and hope it actually completes this time for real.
Download Fails at 99%
The download gets to 99% complete and then just… fails.
So close…
This happens because Facebook’s download servers timeout right at the end of large transfers. Using a download manager helps because it can resume from 99% instead of starting over.
When Nothing Works
Okay so you’ve tried everything and Facebook STILL won’t let you download your data… what now?
Contact Facebook Support
Go to facebook.com/help and search for “download data.” There’s a help article with a “Report a Problem” link at the bottom. Explain that you can’t download your data archive and include screenshots of any error messages.
Will they actually help? Probably not…
Facebook support is notoriously useless, but legally they HAVE to provide your data under GDPR and similar laws. If you’re in the EU or UK, mention “GDPR data request” specifically. This sometimes gets escalated to a real person.
Why Facebook Data Download Sucks
Real talk? Facebook’s data download feature is poorly designed and barely maintained. They only created it because laws like GDPR FORCED them to, not because they actually want to make it easy for you to export your data.
They don’t want you leaving…
The feature is intentionally clunky and unreliable. Large archives fail constantly, the interface is confusing, error messages are useless, and there’s no customer support for download issues. Facebook would rather you just keep your data on their platform where they can profit from it.
And the thing that pisses me off most? This is YOUR data and they make it this hard to access!! Every photo you uploaded, every post you wrote, every message you sent… it’s YOURS, but getting it back from Facebook is like pulling teeth.
If you’re dealing with other Facebook data issues like not being able to download individual photos or problems with deleting your old posts, it’s all part of the same pattern. Facebook is better at COLLECTING your data than letting you actually CONTROL it lowkey.

At the end of the day, downloading your Facebook data archive is possible but unnecessarily difficult. Try the fixes above – request smaller archives, use a desktop with wired internet, disable browser extensions no cap.
