You right-click and nothing happens, or you tap the three dots and “Download” isn’t even an option. I’m not gonna lie, Facebook makes downloading content way harder than it should be, and sometimes it flat-out doesn’t work…
The Main Reasons Downloads Fail
Facebook blocks downloads for multiple reasons. Here’s what’s probably stopping you:
- It’s not YOUR content – You can only download photos/videos YOU uploaded
- Privacy settings block it – The owner disabled downloads on their post
- You’re using the mobile app – The app limits download options
- Browser issues – Your browser settings are preventing it
- Facebook servers glitching – Sometimes Facebook just breaks
- Old Live videos – Facebook auto-deletes Live videos after 30 days
Let’s break down each problem and actually fix this shit…
You Can Only Download YOUR OWN Content
Here’s the thing people don’t realize – Facebook ONLY lets you download photos and videos that YOU personally uploaded, no cap. If someone else posted it (even if you’re tagged in it), you can’t download it through Facebook’s official download button!
So if you’re trying to save your friend’s vacation photos or someone else’s video, that’s why the download option isn’t showing up. It’s not a glitch – Facebook just doesn’t allow it.
This is SO annoying!
Download Your Own Photos
Open Facebook and find the photo YOU uploaded. Click the three dots in the corner. Select Download – if you own it, this option will be there!
Alternatively, right-click on your photo and choose Save Image As… to download it directly. Learn more on Facebook’s official help page.
Download Your Own Videos
Go to your profile and click Videos. Find the video you want. Click the three dots and select either Download HD or Download SD depending on quality, bet!
If you don’t see the download option, the video might still be processing. Wait a few minutes and try again…
Privacy Settings Block Downloads
Even if YOU uploaded something, strict privacy settings on that post might prevent downloads from working! And if you’re trying to download someone ELSE’S content? Their privacy settings control whether that’s possible, for real.
Facebook lets users disable downloads on their posts. So even if you can SEE a photo or video, the owner can prevent you from saving it.
This is intentional – people don’t want their content reposted without permission. Which makes sense, I guess, but it’s still frustrating when you just want to save a photo you’re tagged in.
Your Options When Downloads Are Blocked
Screenshot it – Not ideal quality but it works for photos. On your phone, just screenshot the image. On desktop, use your operating system’s screenshot tool.
Ask the owner – Message them and request the file directly. Most people will just send it to you if you ask nicely.
Use Facebook’s “Save” feature – You can save posts to view later even if you can’t download them. It’s not the same as having the file, but you won’t lose track of it, deadass.

Mobile App Limitations Are The Worst
The Facebook mobile app is LIMITED when it comes to downloads. You can download YOUR OWN content through the app, but downloading other people’s posts doesn’t work the same way as desktop!
Why does Facebook do this?!
Because they want you to use their “Save” feature instead. They’re keeping everything within their ecosystem so you keep using the app. It’s annoying but that’s how they designed it.
Mobile Workarounds
Use mobile browser – Open Facebook in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android) instead of the app. Long-press photos to save them. This bypasses the app’s restrictions.
Request desktop site – In your mobile browser, select Request Desktop Site. This shows the full website where downloads work better, fr.
Third-party apps – Some apps claim to download Facebook videos, but be CAREFUL. Many are sketchy and could steal your login or install malware! I wouldn’t risk it honestly.
Browser Problems Can Break Everything
Sometimes your BROWSER prevents downloads if you have strict security settings or extensions blocking them. I’ve seen this happen a lot with privacy-focused browsers.
Check your download settings and make sure downloads aren’t blocked. Some browsers ask where to save files before downloading – enable that option if it’s disabled.
Ad blockers can interfere with downloads too. Turn them off for Facebook temporarily and see if that fixes it.
Old cached data breaks downloads more often than you’d think. Clear your cache and cookies, then try again. If Chrome isn’t working, try Firefox or Edge. Sometimes one just works better, IYKYK.

Go to Settings & Privacy → Settings → Your Facebook Information → Download Your Information.
Choose what you want – just photos and videos or everything. Pick your file format (HTML or JSON) and quality. Click Create File and wait!
Facebook will email you when it’s ready. This can take hours or even days if you have lots of content. But you’ll get a complete backup of everything. Check Facebook’s data download guide for details.
Honestly this is the best way to save everything at once if you’re worried about losing your memories.
Facebook Deletes Old Live Videos
Facebook automatically DELETES Live videos older than 30 days! If you’re trying to download an old Live video, it might already be gone.
They just delete your content…
They implemented this to save server space. They only keep Live videos for 30 days, then delete them permanently unless you downloaded them first. They claim they send notifications, but most people miss them or ignore them thinking it’s just more Facebook spam.
Download within 30 days – as soon as you finish a Live video, download it immediately! Don’t wait thinking you’ll do it later because you WILL forget.
Check notifications and actually READ those warnings. Download your content before it’s gone forever.
Use bulk download – the “Download Your Information” feature includes Live videos, so grab them all at once if you have multiple!
Third-Party Tools Are Risky As Hell
Some browser extensions and websites claim they can download ANY Facebook content. Some work, but they’re risky as FUCK!
They might steal your login credentials, install malware on your computer, violate Facebook’s Terms (your account could get banned), or give you lower quality downloads than the originals.
If you MUST use one, research it first. Read reviews, check for malware flags on sites like VirusTotal, and NEVER enter your password on random sites. Honestly? Just use Facebook’s official methods. Not worth the risk.

What Actually Works
