Yo so I’m trying to share this hilarious post to my timeline and guess what? The share button either doesn’t exist or when I click it there’s literally no “Share to Timeline” option anywhere. Just “Share to Feed” or “Send in Messenger” but my actual timeline? Nowhere to be found!
I’m not playing…
And scrolling through forums shows me I’m definitely not alone here. Thousands of people are dealing with this nonsense where Facebook just randomly decided to hide or break the share-to-timeline feature. Some people see the button but it doesn’t work, others don’t even see it at all.
Wait – “Share to Feed” IS Your Timeline
Here’s something wild that Facebook never bothered explaining properly – “Share to Feed” IS sharing to your timeline! Yeah, seriously. They just renamed it because apparently “timeline” was too straightforward and they needed to confuse everyone.
Your feed = your timeline = your profile wall. Same damn thing.
So if you see “Share to Feed” that’s it!
But okay, let’s say you’re clicking share and that option legitimately isn’t showing up at all. Then we’ve got actual problems to fix.
Privacy Settings Killed The Share Button
Most of the time when you can’t share something, it’s because the original poster set their privacy to “Friends Only” or posted it in a closed group. Facebook decided showing a share button on friends-only posts was pointless and confusing, so they just… removed it.
Think about it – if someone shares a post only with their friends, and you share it to your timeline, the only people who’d see it are mutual friends. So basically people who could already see it anyway. Facebook said fuck it, no share button for you.
- Public posts = share button shows up
- Friends only posts = no share button (usually)
- Closed group posts = definitely no share button
But if someone tagged YOU in a friends-only post? Then you can share it because now your friends can see it too. Makes sense? Barely!
The Sketchy Workaround That Actually Works
Okay so you really wanna share something that doesn’t have a share button. Here’s what you do:
Click the three dots in the top right corner > select Save Post. Then go to your saved posts (menu > Saved). From there, you’ll magically have the option to share it to your timeline!
Why this works I have no idea…
It’s like Facebook’s way of saying “fine, if you’re dedicated enough to jump through hoops we’ll let you share it.” Absolutely ridiculous but hey, at least it works.
Timeline And Tagging Settings Are Blocking You
Facebook has this whole section called “Timeline and Tagging” that controls what can be posted to your timeline. If these settings are messed up, you might not be able to share posts even when the button is there.
Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Profile and Tagging.
“Who can post on your timeline?” – If this is set to “Only Me” it blocks everything including your own shares. Yeah it’s that stupid.
“Review posts you’re tagged in before they appear?” – If this is ON, posts go to a review queue instead of showing up immediately.
Mess around with these settings. Sometimes Facebook auto-changes them without telling you, especially after updates. Because of course they do!
Update Or Reinstall The App
When’s the last time you updated Facebook? Be honest. If you’ve been ignoring those notifications for weeks, that could be your whole problem.
Go to the App Store or Google Play, search Facebook, tap update. Then restart your entire phone – not just close the app, actually power it off and back on.
And if updating doesn’t fix it?
Nuclear option time!!
Delete the Facebook app completely and reinstall it fresh. This wipes out corrupted files and broken settings that built up over months. Just make sure you remember your password first because you’ll need to log back in.
After reinstalling, the app usually runs way faster too since you dumped all that accumulated garbage data.
Clear Your Cache Already
I swear every Facebook problem comes back to corrupted cache at some point. Clear that junk!
Mobile: Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage > Clear Cache (not Clear Data unless you wanna log out).
Desktop: Browser settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data > cached images and cookies.
Close Facebook completely, wait 30 seconds, then open it fresh. Test sharing again.
You’re Temporarily Restricted
If Facebook thinks you’ve been spamming or violating community standards, they might temporarily restrict your sharing abilities. You can still browse and comment but certain actions get blocked.
Check your Support Inbox in the Facebook menu to see if there’s any message about restrictions. If you’re restricted, you can appeal through the Help Center but honestly?
Facebook’s appeals process is slower than watching paint dry…
Restrictions usually lift after a few days if it’s your first offense. But if you’re a repeat “offender” (even if you didn’t do anything wrong) it might take weeks. Their moderation system is absolute trash and nobody there seems to care!
Facebook’s Servers Are Toast
Sometimes it’s not you at all – Facebook’s servers are just having a meltdown. When they push updates or make backend changes, stuff breaks. Share buttons disappear, features glitch out, the whole platform slows down.
Check Downdetector or Google “is Facebook down” to see if thousands of other people are reporting the same problem.
If they are? All you can do is wait for Facebook to fix their shit. Usually resolves within a few hours. But for a company worth billions, their infrastructure breaks way too fucking often honestly.
When Facebook Support Is Your Last Hope
If you’ve tried everything and still can’t share posts, I guess you could report it to Facebook through the Help Center. Click report a technical issue, explain what’s happening, include screenshots.
But let me save you some time and disappointment – Facebook support is about as helpful as a screen door on a submarine. You’ll wait days just to get an automated message telling you to clear your cache and update the app. The same basic fixes you already tried!
I’ve contacted them three times over the years and never once got an actual human response that helped. It’s genuinely terrible and they clearly don’t give a damn about individual user problems.
You’re basically on your own with this…
And if you’re dealing with other Facebook nightmares, check out these guides on deleting posts that won’t delete or Reels that won’t upload. Because when Facebook breaks something, it usually breaks five other things at the same time.
Here’s What Actually Worked
So after dealing with this bullshit for like a week, I finally figured out “Share to Feed” was the same as “Share to Timeline” and I’d been confused this whole time. Felt like an idiot but at least the mystery was solved!
For people with legitimate missing buttons? Clearing cache fixed it for most. Timeline and Tagging settings fixed it for others. And some people just had to wait out Facebook’s server issues.
The most rage-inducing part is how random it all is. Works perfectly fine for weeks, then suddenly breaks for no reason, then fixes itself three days later, then breaks again next month. It’s like Facebook is actively experimenting on us to see how much bullshit we’ll tolerate before we all switch to Instagram permanently.
Spoiler alert: we’ll tolerate a lot apparently because we’re all still here getting mad at share buttons!
If this article helped you finally share that post you’ve been trying to share for hours, pass it along to someone else who’s probably stuck in the same nightmare right now!!
