Facebook GIFs Not Loading in Messenger: Can’t Send or Search GIFs

messenger gif search broken fix

You’re trying to send a GIF in Messenger but the button is missing or won’t load?!

Or the GIF search is completely blank!!

Maybe you tap the GIF icon and nothing happens, or the GIF menu shows up but displays empty squares instead of actual animations. This is SO frustrating when you just want to send a funny reaction GIF!

Why Messenger GIFs Break

GIFs fail to load in Facebook Messenger for several annoying reasons, and Messenger gives you zero explanation about which one broke YOUR GIFs, deadass!

Here’s what’s blocking your GIF feature:

  • Internet too slow – Weak connection prevents GIF library from loading
  • GIF file too large – Files over 25MB won’t send successfully
  • App needs updating – Old Messenger versions have broken GIF integration
  • Cache corrupted – Temporary data stopping GIFs from displaying
  • GIPHY/Tenor server down – External GIF providers experiencing outages
  • Permissions denied – App can’t access media storage for GIFs
  • Device incompatible – Old phones don’t support GIF keyboard feature

And let’s fix each one, no cap….

Check Your Internet Connection First

This is the #1 cause of GIFs not loading – your internet is too slow or unstable!

GIFs are hosted on external platforms like GIPHY and Tenor…

Every time you search GIFs, Messenger has to load them from these external servers. If your connection is weak?? The GIF menu times out before images can load.

Switch between WiFi and mobile data to test which works better. Turn off WiFi and try cellular – if GIFs load instantly now, your WiFi was the problem!!

Run a speed test at Fast.com…

You need at least 3Mbps for GIFs to load smoothly. Anything slower causes loading failures and blank GIF menus.

And restart your router if WiFi seems unstable. Unplug it for 2 minutes, plug back in, wait for it to fully reconnect!!

Check Facebook’s official Messenger help page for more GIF troubleshooting tips.

Clear Messenger Cache And Data

Corrupted cache stops GIFs from loading even when everything else works fine!

Android Method

Go to Settings > Apps > Messenger > Storage > Clear Cache. Restart phone, open Messenger, try loading GIFs.

If that doesn’t fix it, tap Clear Data too (you’ll log back in). This wipes corrupted GIF library files blocking animations from displaying, fr fr.

iPhone Method

Delete Messenger app completely. Restart iPhone. Reinstall from App Store. Log back in and test GIFs in a conversation.

iOS doesn’t let you clear cache separately…

So deleting and reinstalling is the only way to clear corrupted temporary files!

Having other Messenger problems? We’ve got comprehensive troubleshooting guides…

Update Messenger To Latest Version

Outdated Messenger versions have broken GIF integration constantly – Facebook changes how GIFs load with every update!

On iPhone: App Store > Search Messenger > Tap Update.

On Android: Google Play Store > Search Messenger > Tap Update.

After updating, force close Messenger completely and reopen. The GIF button should work properly now if outdated software was the problem!!

Turn on automatic updates (Settings > App Store > App Updates on iPhone, or Play Store > Settings > Auto-update apps on Android) so this doesn’t happen again…

Check If GIF Is Too Large

Facebook Messenger won’t send GIFs larger than 25MB – and it doesn’t always tell you this is why it failed!!

If you’re trying to send a specific GIF and it shows a red exclamation mark??

That GIF might be too big. Try sending a different GIF from Messenger’s built-in library instead!!

Built-in GIFs from the search menu are always under 25MB. But if you downloaded a GIF from another site and tried uploading it as an attachment?? It might exceed the size limit.

Test sending different GIFs to see if the problem is with one specific file or all GIFs in general…

Check App Permissions

Messenger needs certain permissions to load GIFs – if you denied media access, the GIF feature won’t work at all!

On Android: Settings > Apps > Messenger > Permissions. Make sure Photos and Videos and Storage are set to Allow.

If they’re denied or set to “Ask every time,” change them to Allow. Force stop Messenger and reopen!!

On iPhone: Settings > Messenger > Photos. Set this to All Photos or at least Selected Photos (NOT None).

Also check Local Network permission…

Settings > Messenger > Local Network should be toggled ON. This lets Messenger communicate with GIPHY and Tenor servers to download GIF libraries!

Force Stop And Restart Messenger

Sometimes Messenger gets “stuck” and the GIF feature stops responding – force stopping fixes this instantly!

On Android: Settings > Apps > Messenger > Force Stop. Then reopen Messenger and try GIFs again.

On iPhone: Swipe up from bottom (or double-click home button on older iPhones). Swipe up on Messenger to close it completely. Reopen and test GIFs.

This refreshes the app’s memory and clears any temporary glitches blocking GIF functionality!!

Check If GIPHY Or Tenor Is Down

Facebook Messenger gets GIFs from external providers – GIPHY and Tenor, IYKYK!

If these services are experiencing outages??

Your GIFs won’t load no matter what you do. This isn’t a problem with Messenger or your device – it’s the GIF providers themselves having server issues.

Check Downdetector.com and search for “GIPHY” or “Tenor” to see if other users are reporting problems. If there’s a widespread outage?? You just have to wait for them to fix their servers…

Usually these outages only last 30 minutes to a few hours…

So try again later if the GIF providers are down!

Log Out And Back In

Logging out resets your session data which fixes GIF loading issues for some users!

In Messenger, tap your profile picture > Log Out. Close Messenger completely. Reopen and log back in with your credentials.

Try searching for GIFs now…

This refresh clears temporary session glitches that prevent the GIF menu from loading properly. It’s a quick fix worth trying before more complicated solutions!!

Also having video call problems? That’s another common Messenger issue…

Where Is The GIF Button Located

Some users can’t find GIFs because they’re looking in the wrong place – the button moved in recent Messenger updates!

On mobile app: Open a conversation. Tap the text field. Look for the smiley face icon (emoji button). Tap it. You’ll see tabs at the bottom – tap the GIF tab.

The GIF button ISN’T next to the text field anymore. It’s inside the emoji/sticker menu now!!

On desktop/web version: Open messenger.com. Start a conversation. Look for the GIF button directly below the text field (it looks like a search icon with “GIF” text).

Click it to open the GIF search menu…

Reinstall Messenger Completely

If nothing else worked, delete Messenger and reinstall it fresh – this fixes corrupted app files!

On Android: Settings > Apps > Messenger > Uninstall. Restart phone. Go to Play Store and reinstall Messenger.

On iPhone: Hold Messenger app icon until it wiggles > tap X to delete. Restart phone. Go to App Store and reinstall Messenger.

Log back in and test GIFs immediately…

A fresh install removes any corrupted data or glitched files that were preventing GIFs from working. This should fix basically ANY software-related GIF issue, no cap!!

Desktop Browser GIF Problems

Using Messenger on desktop?? Browser issues can block GIFs from loading!

Check browser extensions first…

Ad blockers, privacy extensions, or script blockers often prevent GIFs from displaying. Disable ALL extensions temporarily and reload Messenger!

If GIFs work with extensions off?? Re-enable them one by one to find which extension is blocking GIFs.

Also check autoplay settings…

In Safari: Preferences > Websites > Auto-Play. Set Facebook.com to Allow All Auto-Play.

In Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Additional Content Settings > Motion. Make sure motion/animations aren’t blocked for Messenger.com!!

GIFs won’t play if your browser has autoplay disabled…

Try Desktop Web Version

If GIFs won’t load in the mobile app, try using messenger.com on your phone’s browser instead!

Open Chrome or Safari on your phone. Go to messenger.com. Log in and try sending GIFs there.

If GIFs work on the web version but not in the app??

The problem is definitely with your Messenger app installation. Delete the app completely, restart your phone, and reinstall fresh from the app store!!

Device Too Old For GIF Feature

Really old phones don’t support the GIF keyboard feature in Messenger – the hardware is too outdated!

If you’re using Android 7 or older??

Or iPhone 6 or older??? The GIF feature might not be compatible with your device at all, IYKYK.

Check if your phone’s operating system is updated to the latest version it can support. Go to Settings > System Update (Android) or Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone).

If you’re already on the newest OS your device supports and GIFs still don’t work??

Your device might be too old for Messenger’s GIF feature. You’d need to upgrade to a newer phone to use GIFs…

Contact Messenger Support

Tried everything and GIFs STILL won’t load?? Time to contact Facebook support directly!

Open Messenger > tap your profile picture > Help & Support > Report a Problem. Describe the exact issue – “GIFs won’t load in conversations” or “GIF button missing from keyboard.”

Include your device model and Messenger version…

The more details you provide, the faster they can diagnose the problem. Support usually responds within 24-48 hours with specific troubleshooting steps for your situation!

Final Thoughts

Start with checking your internet connection and clearing cache – those fix most GIF issues quickly!!

If those don’t work, update Messenger, check permissions, and try logging out/back in. And if the problem is with one specific GIF showing a red exclamation mark?? That GIF is probably over 25MB and too large to send.

The most frustrating part is when GIPHY or Tenor servers are down. There’s nothing you can do except wait for them to fix it!! These outages usually only last 30-60 minutes though, fr fr.

Just remember that GIFs are hosted externally, so Messenger needs a good internet connection to load them from GIPHY and Tenor servers. If your WiFi is weak or unstable, switch to mobile data and see if that fixes it!!
