Facebook Widget Not Working on iPhone Home Screen

facebook ios widget blank not loading

So you added the FACEBOOK WIDGET to your iPhone home screen and it’s just… blank?? Or it shows old posts from days ago and won’t refresh, or the widget refuses to add at all when you try to set it up…

What the hell is wrong with this thing?!

And the annoying part? The Facebook app itself works FINE when you open it, but the widget on your home screen is completely broken. It’s either blank, frozen, or showing “Unable to Load” 🙁

I’m not gonna lie, iPhone widgets are buggy as hell and Facebook’s widget implementation is especially trash.

Why Facebook Widget Isn’t Working

iPhone widgets rely on background app refresh to update their content. If something blocks that process, the widget breaks.

Common reasons Facebook widget fails:

  • Background App Refresh is OFF – Widget can’t update without it
  • Low Power Mode is ON – Disables background updates to save battery
  • Facebook app needs updating – Old versions have broken widget code
  • iOS needs updating – Widget system bugs get fixed in iOS updates
  • Storage is full – Not enough space for widget to cache data
  • Widget cache is corrupted – Glitched data prevents loading

Let’s fix these deadass.

Enable Background App Refresh

This is the #1 reason widgets don’t work. If Background App Refresh is disabled, widgets can’t update.

Go to SettingsGeneralBackground App Refresh. Make sure it’s set to ON or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.

Then scroll down and find Facebook in the app list. Toggle it ON.

This fixes it immediately…

Without Background App Refresh, the Facebook widget can’t pull new posts or notifications. It’ll stay blank or frozen on whatever it last loaded no cap.

Turn Off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode disables background updates to save battery, which breaks widgets.

Go to SettingsBattery → turn Low Power Mode OFF.

Or swipe down from top-right corner (or up from bottom on older iPhones) to open Control Center and tap the battery icon to disable Low Power Mode.

After turning it off, wait 2-3 minutes and check if the Facebook widget starts loading. Background processes take a moment to resume.

Update Facebook App and iOS

Outdated apps have bugs that break widgets. Facebook regularly patches widget issues in app updates.

Open the App Store → tap your profile icon (top right) → scroll to Available Updates → find Facebook → tap Update.

Also check for iOS updates: Go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update. If an update is available, install it.

iOS 18 specifically has widget bugs…

If you’re on iOS 18, widgets are extra broken right now. Apple introduced new widget bugs that affect Facebook and other apps. Updating to the latest iOS 18.x version helps, but some widget issues persist until Apple patches them properly deadass.

After updating both, remove the Facebook widget from your home screen and add it back fresh. Updated code usually fixes broken widgets.

Remove and Re-Add the Widget

Sometimes widget data gets corrupted. Removing and re-adding it clears the cache and resets everything.

Long-press the Facebook widget → tap Remove Widget → confirm Remove.

Then long-press an empty area on your home screen → tap the + button (top left) → search for Facebook → select the widget size you want → tap Add Widget.

Usually works…

The fresh widget should load properly. If it’s still blank, wait 5-10 minutes – widgets don’t update instantly, they refresh on a schedule set by iOS.

Check Your Storage Space

If your iPhone storage is nearly full, widgets can’t cache data properly and fail to load.

Go to SettingsGeneraliPhone Storage. Check how much free space you have.

If you’re under 2-3GB free? That’s the problem. Delete old photos, videos, or apps you don’t use to free up space. Similar to Facebook taking up too much storage, full storage breaks functionality.

After freeing space, restart your iPhone and check if the widget starts working.

Restart Your iPhone

Classic tech support advice but it actually works. Restarting clears temporary glitches affecting widgets.

iPhone X and newer: Hold Volume Up + Side Button until slider appears → drag to power off → wait 30 seconds → hold Side Button to turn back on.

iPhone 8 and older: Hold Top or Side Button until slider appears → drag to power off → wait 30 seconds → hold button to turn back on.

After restart, check the Facebook widget. Background processes reset and widgets usually start loading properly bet.

Delete and Reinstall Facebook App

If nothing else works, a fresh install fixes corrupted app files that break widgets.

Option 1 – Offload (keeps your data): Go to SettingsGeneraliPhone StorageFacebookOffload App → then tap Reinstall App. This redownloads Facebook without deleting your login data.

Option 2 – Full delete: Long-press the Facebook app → tap Remove App → select Delete App. Then go to App Store → reinstall Facebook.

Log back in, then add the widget to your home screen. Fresh installs eliminate bugs that accumulated from updates fr fr.

Offloading usually works better…

What If Widget Still Won’t Work?

Okay so you’ve tried EVERYTHING and the Facebook widget is STILL broken… what the fuck?

Check if other widgets work. Try adding a different app’s widget (like Weather or Calendar). If THOSE don’t work either? It’s an iOS issue not Facebook-specific. You might need to restore your iPhone.

Wait for Facebook to fix it. Sometimes Facebook pushes buggy app updates that break widgets for everyone. Check if other people are reporting the same issue on Twitter or Reddit. If it’s widespread, you just have to wait for Facebook to release a patch fr fr. This is similar to when the Facebook app keeps crashing after updates.

Use the actual app instead. Widgets are convenient but not essential. Just open the Facebook app normally until the widget gets fixed. If you’re having trouble even opening the app, you might be dealing with Facebook not loading properly. I know widgets defeat the purpose but it’s better than nothing lowkey.

Why iPhone Widgets Are So Unreliable

Real talk? iOS widgets have ALWAYS been buggy. Apple’s widget system is poorly implemented and apps struggle to make them work consistently.

This is bullshit…

Widgets randomly stop updating, show blank screens, or drain battery like crazy. And because they rely on background processes that iOS heavily restricts, there’s only so much apps like Facebook can do to make them reliable.

Compare this to Android widgets which work way better – iOS widgets feel like an afterthought Apple added because Android had them first. The entire system needs a redesign but Apple hasn’t prioritized fixing it.

And Facebook’s widget specifically? It’s basic as hell. Just shows recent posts. No customization, no useful features. Even when it DOES work, it’s barely worth using compared to just opening the app. And if your Facebook notifications aren’t working either, you’re missing updates anyway.

Alternative: Use Shortcuts Instead

Instead of fighting with the broken Facebook widget, create a Shortcut that opens Facebook directly. It’s more reliable.

Open the Shortcuts app → tap + → tap Add Action → search Open App → select Facebook → tap the three dots (top right) → name it something → tap Add to Home Screen.

Now you have a custom Facebook icon on your home screen that opens the app instantly. Not as fancy as a widget but actually WORKS.

Final Thoughts

Facebook’s iPhone widget breaks constantly because of iOS background restrictions, storage issues, and buggy app code. But enabling Background App Refresh, updating the app, removing Low Power Mode, and re-adding the widget fixes it for most people.

It shouldn’t be this complicated…

If the widget still won’t work after trying everything? Just use the app normally. Widgets are overrated anyway and the Facebook widget barely adds functionality even when working properly for real.

And honestly, Apple needs to fix their widget system because this problem affects EVERY app’s widgets, not just Facebook. Until they do, expect widgets to randomly break and require constant troubleshooting.

If this helped you fix your broken Facebook widget, share it with anyone else staring at a blank widget on their iPhone… because this is ridiculously common and Apple’s support docs are useless!!
